Spraying Kandy

On Sunday 2nd August, the painter called and asked if I wanted to take pics while he's shooting the car. Absolutely!
Janne sprayed the car for over four hours in a row, and was pretty exhausted when done. The House of Kolor products are costly, but very high quality materials. These paint jobs last and won't fade away in a year unlike some cheaper products.

Sealer

At first, Janne sprayed two coats of Ko-Seal Sealer. It's a 2-part silver metallic sealer which was tinted with Purple Kandy Koncentrate. The sealer improves adhesion and prevents the solvents of following coats from soaking into the primer and bodywork, reducing dulling and improving color fastness. It also makes the car one color, improving the coverage of the following base coat.

These pics were taken from behind the window of the paint booth. The white spots are actually crud on the window glass.

Above left: After the sealer is allowed some dry time, it is followed by three coats of Meteor Maroon (BC-06) Base Coat. This is a single-stage acrylic product that covers fast.
Above right: The basecoat if followed by 5 coats of Purple Kandy UK-10, the first 3 coats over-reduced 10%. It's a 2-part urethane product.
The UK-10 Purple is not a particularly strong pigment, and blotches easily.  Finally, there's two to three coats of clearcoat UFC-35 Flo-Klear, which is also a 2-part urethane material with high strength and UV-resistance.

Color sanding

Here it is a few days later, now being color-sanded. The fresh paint needs to outgas all the remaining solvents for a couple of days before color-sanding. Next it will receive a final flow-coat of clear.  The flow-coat clear will be over-reduced by 30-50%.

Applying an additional flow-coat is the American way. The European way is to color sand and buff the surface right after the initial clear coats. On the background, you will see the trunk lid that has been painted pearl white, color sanded and buffed. The roof will receive the same treatment.

The purpose of color sanding and buffing is to remove all surface imperfections and orange peel, to achieve a smooth, mirror-like surface.
Color sanding

Here it's clearly visible how the fender has been color sanded while the hood is still shiny.
